(Na Ying - Conquer)

zhōng yú nǐ zhǎo dào yī gè fāng shì fēn chū le shèng fù
You finally found a way to decide who wins and who loses

shū yíng de dài jià shì bǐ cǐ fěn shēn suì gǔ
The cost of winning or losing is that we're both shattered to pieces

wài biǎo jiàn kāng de nǐ xīn lǐ shāng hén wú shù
You look fine on the outside but carry countless wounds within

wán qiáng de wǒ shì zhè chǎng zhàn yì de fú lǔ
Stubborn as I am, I became the prisoner of this battle

jiù zhè yàng bèi nǐ zhēng fú
Conquered by you, just like this

qiē duàn le suǒ yǒu tuì lù
Every way out has been cut off

wǒ de xīn qíng shì jiān gù
My feelings remain unshakeable

wǒ de jué dìng shì hú tú
But my choices have been foolish

jiù zhè yàng bèi nǐ zhēng fú
Conquered by you, just like this

hē xià nǐ cáng hǎo de dú
Drinking down the poison you kept hidden

wǒ de jù qíng yǐ luò mù
The curtain has fallen on my story

wǒ de ài hèn yǐ rù tǔ
My love and hate are buried underground

zhōng yú wǒ míng bái liǎ rén yào de shì yī gè jié shù
I finally understand that what we both want is an ending

suǒ yǒu de biàn jiě dōu ràng duì fāng yǐ wéi shì qǐ tú
Every argument makes the other think it's just another scheme

fàng yī bǎ huǒ shāo diào nǐ sòng wǒ de lǐ wù
I set fire to every gift you ever gave me

què jiāo bù xī wǒ xiōng kǒu zhuó rè de fèn nù
But nothing can quench the burning rage inside my chest

jiù zhè yàng bèi nǐ zhēng fú
Conquered by you, just like this

qiē duàn le suǒ yǒu tuì lù
Every way out has been cut off

wǒ de xīn qíng shì jiān gù
My feelings remain unshakeable

wǒ de jué dìng shì hú tú
But my choices have been foolish

jiù zhè yàng bèi nǐ zhēng fú
Conquered by you, just like this

hē xià nǐ cáng hǎo de dú
Drinking down the poison you kept hidden

wǒ de jù qíng yǐ luò mù
The curtain has fallen on my story

wǒ de ài hèn yǐ rù tǔ
My love and hate are buried underground

nǐ rú guǒ jīng guò wǒ de fén mù
if you ever pass by my grave

nǐ kě yǐ shuāng shǒu hé shí wèi wǒ zhù fú
you can clasp your hands together and wish me well

jiù zhè yàng bèi nǐ zhēng fú
Conquered by you, just like this

qiē duàn le suǒ yǒu tuì lù
Every way out has been cut off

wǒ de xīn qíng shì jiān gù
My feelings remain unshakeable

Song Interpretation

Short Summary

征服 frames the end of a toxic relationship as a battle where both sides lose, and the singer is the one taken prisoner. Rather than pleading or mourning, Na Ying delivers it with a cold, controlled fury that made the song feel unlike anything else in Mandopop at the time. The title's double meaning is the point: she has been conquered, but she knows it.

Detailed Insights

袁惟仁 built the lyric entirely around military metaphor: a relationship as warfare, love as siege, departure as defeat. The opening verse sets both parties as casualties ("彼此粉身碎骨," shattered to pieces) before landing on the image that defines the song, that the singer is the prisoner of her own stubborn feelings. What follows is not the usual Mandopop grief ballad but something more unsettling: a person who sees exactly what is happening to her and cannot stop it.

The chorus is constructed in tight, parallel couplets that pair each conquering with a consequence. "我的心情是坚固,我的决定是糊涂" (my feelings are unshakeable, but my choices are foolish) is the crux of the whole song in two lines. The poison metaphor in the second half ("喝下你藏好的毒") turns passive victimhood into something the singer actively chose, which is far more interesting than simple heartbreak. The finale, where she imagines her lover passing her grave and praying for her, carries no sentimentality: it is just acknowledgment that this is how it ends.

Released in 1998, 征服 won the CCTV-MTV Music Award for Best Female Artist and became one of the defining songs of 那英's career. Its stark, battle-hardened tone set it apart from the more wistful breakup songs dominating Mandopop at the time, and Na Ying's delivery, controlled rather than tearful, gave the song a quality that aged far better than most of its contemporaries.
